Governance of Freenet Boards

Speaker: Carol Humphries, Chair, Edmonton FreeNet Board
Time: Sunday August 18, 9:00 AM
Report By: Tyler Hill, Student, Grant MacEwan Community College

The role of the governing board, and its relationship to the staff and members, was the topic of discussion in this session. Carol Humphries used the structure of the Edmonton Freenet as her main example. She demonstrated the different types of roles the board can take and how these different board models must suit the objectives of the Freenet's mission. She also covered the division of responsibility. In the case of the Edmonton Freenet, the staff report to the executive director, the executive director reports to the board, and the board is responsible to the members. Carol discussed the responsibilities of the board and it's end goals. In her summary she states that the governing board must work with the staff, be willing to change, to invest time and money, and have the fortitude to carry on.
