Track: Get the Spirit Going
Session:

Chebucto Suite:
Three Models for Community Nets

Speaker: David Trueman, Systems Manager, Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computing Science, Dalhousie University, Halifax
Time: Saturday August 17, 1:30 PM
Reported by: Mike MacDonald, Student, Audiovisual Communications, Grant MacEwan Community College

This session consisted of two sections. The first was an explanation of a model by which community networks can locate a starting point for their service, and pace the expansion of the service thereafter. The model consisted of a list of services that community networks can add sequentially to reduce the organizational and operational hazards that many newly starting networks can experience. The model for services was presented sequentially as follows: local web page, public access, training, autonomous local content, e-mail service, volunteer management, local conferencing, dial up access. Mr. Trueman went on to show how the Chebucto Suite software, which runs under UNIX operating systems, can make it more simple to setup and manage a versatile and cost effective community net. The presentation notes from this seminar will be available on the conference web site.
