Managing the Impact of
Technological Change

A Hands On Workshop

Speaker: Peter de Jager, professional speaker
Time: Friday, August 16 3:00 p.m.
Report by: Janet Buterman, Tangram public relations generalists ltd.

Peter de Jager's workshop participants experienced that change involves chaos. Chaos brings on feelings of incompetence. "But incompetent," said de Jager, "means without skill. I am an incompetent brain surgeon. That doesn't bother me in the least."

Managing the impact of technological change is easier when the steps of change are clear. De Jager uses the six-step Virginia Satir Change Model.

  1. status quo
  2. foreign element (causes change)
  3. rejection or denial
  4. chaos
  5. integration
  6. new status quo

"A common myth is that people are afraid to change. That's nonsense. People are afraid of being forced to change," de Jager continued, "when a person wants something badly enough, they'll willingly change."De Jager's workshop was interactive and fun. Participants learned a valuable tool for navigating the uncertain waters of technological change.
